Buick Regal GS making a comeback?

There was a time, believe it or not, when Buick had performance models in it's lineup. And we're not just talking about the 60's and 70's, but also the 80's, which saw the venerable GS, and GNX.

Fast forward to today. Every car in the Buick lineup is pretty snore inducing, and the average age of it's owner is in the 60+ range. Buick is aiming to change all that by first bringing back the Regal badge, and now it is showing off the Regal GS at the Detroit Auto Show.

The Regal GS is based directly on the high performance OPC version of the Opel Insignia, but instead of using the 325-horsepower turbocharged V6, Buick is sticking with its four-cylinder-only strategy for the Regal. The GS is powered by a higher output version of the EcoTec four cylinder that is found in many other GM products.

Engine output is a staggering 255hp and 295 pound feet of torque. All this power is routed through a six speed manual transmission (!).

To ensure that the whoa matches the go, 14 inch front Brembo rotors with four piston calipers sit up front, and there are 19 inch wheels all around.

Thankfully, the car is all wheel drive so it won't experience the wonderful torque steer that many highly powered front drive cars have issues with. Recaro seats hug the driver, the driver can use an Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) to select different settings for the throttle response, adaptive damping, steering and shifting (in the automatic version).

GM hasn't officially announced anything yet, as they were quick to point out that this is only a show car. But if you read between the lines, and see how production ready the car appears to be, we think it will be available before long.

Press Release

BUICK UNVEILS REGAL GS SHOW CAR

21st-century successor to Buick's Gran Sport heritage
Bold, sporty design with unique exterior details and an aggressive stance
High-output Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged engine and six-speed manual transmission
Adaptive all-wheel-drive system and electronic limited-slip rear differential
0-60 in less than 6.0 seconds
Buick's class-exclusive Interactive Drive Control System

DETROIT – With an estimated 255 turbocharged horsepower (190 kW), a six-speed manual transmission and an advanced, adaptive all-wheel-drive system, the Buick Regal GS show car is a high-tech, high-performance version of the brand's newest sport sedan. It was introduced at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

The mechanical elements were developed with the aim of delivering a driving experience that is sporting, confidence-inspiring and refined. It has a performance-oriented drivetrain, a lowered body and lower center of gravity. Exterior and interior cues include two additional vertical front air intakes; large, forged aluminum 20-inch wheels and performance tires; a racing-inspired sport steering wheel and metal pedals. Recaro high-performance front seats feature four-way lumbar support and cushion extensions.

"We designed the Regal GS to explore the appeal of a high-performance variant of the Regal," said Craig Bierley, product marketing director for Buick. "Like the Regal, the Regal GS is based on the award-winning Opel Insignia, and we believe it will reinvigorate Buick's storied Gran Sport legacy."

The Regal GS exterior is distinguished by vertical air inlets in the front fascia, as well as unique rocker panels, an integrated rear spoiler, dual exhaust outlets, Olympic White paint and satin metallic accents.

"The idea behind the Regal GS was taking the production model in a more aggressive direction to appeal to performance enthusiasts," said John Cafaro, Buick design director. "But along with its aggressive stance, there's sophisticated style in the design that complements the driving experience."

Inside, the Regal GS varies from the standard Regal by featuring a completely jet black interior, including the pillars and headliner, sport shifter for the six-speed manual transmission and a suede-covered, flat-bottom steering wheel reminiscent of those used in international racing series. The instrument panel glows ice blue when the driver engages the sport mode of the Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS).

Turbocharged AWD performance
Power for the Regal GS comes from a high-output 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged engine with direct-injection technology. It is based on the engine that will be offered on Regal CXL models later this summer, but the engine and turbocharger are tuned to deliver greater boost pressure in the GS. The output is estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm).

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission that directs torque to an adaptive all-wheel-drive system calibrated for performance driving. An electronic, limited-slip rear differential helps ensure the engine's power is distributed effectively during cornering.

The high-performance drivetrain is expected to enable the Regal GS to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. That performance is complemented by a four-wheel-independent suspension, with a unique High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut) design in front. The HiPerStrut system helps reduce torque steer and maintain negative camber during cornering. This improves ultimate grip levels in dry and wet conditions, as well as improves the direct feel of the road, while isolating undesirable feedback. Behind the wheel the driver experiences reduced torque steer, improved grip and increased cornering power, along with crisper handling, steering precision and feedback.

The Regal GS features a high-performance Brembo brake system with 14 x 1.2-inch (355 x 32 mm) cross-drilled rotors; four-piston, high-strength aluminum calipers, and high-performance pads.

The Regal GS is also equipped with Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) chassis technology (also offered on Regal CXL models with the 2.0L turbo engine). It delivers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety, while also adapting the driving characteristics of the car to the driver's preferences. The driver selects among three operating modes – normal, sport and GS – that change the suspension settings, throttle response, shift pattern and steering sensitivity through the variable-effort steering system.

2009 Pontiac G8 GXP priced at $39,995, ST dead?

Nothing like a little good news offset by some bad news in the same day. On a positive note, Pontiac has announced that it's BMW-like G8 GXP will start out at a very reasonable $39,995.

That price includes a $1700 gas guzzler tax and $685 destination fee in the base automatic equipped sedan. The six speed manual will cost an additional $695, and seriously, who wouldn't opt to row their own?

Fuel economy is of course not stellar, coming in at 13mpg city and 20mpg on the highway. But of course there is a price to pay for all that pavement scorching fun, especially as you repeatedly outrun more expensive and exotic cars in stoplight mayhem. All with three passengers comfortably in tow.

And, now for the bad news. Much to the chagrin of El Camino lovers everywhere, the G8 ST will likely live a short life. There have been several rumors coming out of Detroit, along with hints that GM would kill Pontiac altogether. There has also been speculation that it would indeed live on, but only with around half of it's current lineup.

Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC, has stated that the G8 sport trucks lifespan could be short, saying "We would be foolish if we didn't take a second look at whether or not that is the right thing to do."

In a separate article, Docherty goes even further and suggests Pontiac's lineup could be pared down from six vehicles to a single nameplate. According to Docherty, "We are not going to spend tons of money on product development" for Pontiac and that the Pontiac Torrent will be dropped for 2009.

So what will Pontiac be selling? According to Docherty, the G8 is the most likely candidate for GM's performance brand, and that the ideal future for Pontiac would be "very focused, very specialty or niche."

Does Mercury matter anymore?

Ford KugaImage via Wikipedia's Mercury brand, long the lucky recipient of models identical to Ford with a different grille, has been rumored to be on it's way to the Oldsmobile/Plymouth graveyard. It's been a very long time since the brand had anything that caused any kind of excitement (with the possible exception of the Marauder). Mercury was originally designed by Ford to compete with Buick and Cadillac. But since Ford already has Lincoln, is this really a necessity? And competing with Buick is pretty pointless anyway unless you want to get in good with Grandma. The whole purpose of the brand seems to have lost it's way. What's the point of buying a Mariner when you can get an Escape? To have an Escape with fake wood accents? In spite of all of this, Ford announced last week that it would have new product for Mercury, including a small car in 2010. It appears that they finally have a goal in mind for the brand, which is to become a destination for importing European Ford models. Ford says it will build the European Mondeo sedan in North America beginning in 2010. The Mondeo is slightly smaller than the Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan/Lincoln MKZ. Ford has also said that it will build an all new Taurus in 2010, but has not made any mention of a new Sable. In Europe, the Ford Mondeo is a relatively upscale small-midsize sedan designed for a market that will pay a premium price for such a car. Giving it a Mercury badge gives Ford room to charge a bit more for it than Fusion sticker prices, and of course North American production will be much cheaper than European production. The other new Mercury will a version of the crossover of the Ford Kuga. The Kuga is a small Escape-ish style SUV that looks distinctly different from the current Mariner. This is all well and good, I suppose. But if you want to get people more excited in the Mercury brand, why not bring back the Cougar? I'm not talking about the Probe like previous model either. I'm talking about the late 60's/early 70's one. With the current retro styling of the Mustang, it would make perfect sense. I think it would be a great shot in the arm for the brand and would bring people into the showrooms. But please Mercury, no more fake wood grain dashes.

Garmin. Have You Tried GPS? Have You Tried Garmin?

Folks, I received my new Garmin just a few days ago. I ordered it on-line from Meijer Inc. at a very good price. It is a Garmin StreetPilot c340 and it is a blast!

I have been looking for a good price on a GPS for about a year. When I first saw one, they ran about $300 to $800 for an average priced GPS. While looking on the Meijer Website, I ran across a very affordable price of $143.99 for the c340 that usually sells for $399. And free shipping! That is a savings of over $250! Now, before you write me, I know that this was a discontinued model. But remember, the "shelf life" on most electronics is six to twelve months before it is either discontinued or replaced with an upgraded and up-priced model.

Back to the Garmin c340. Take it out of the box, put the mount on it, stick it to the windshield and you are ready to go! It is truly that simple! I do think they should have a warning on it to make sure you put it into the car before trying it out. Mine would not connect to the satellite from inside the house the first time. Now I can bring it back in and load up all of the addresses that I will be visiting that day for my job, all over town. Then just click on the preloaded addresses and I am off and driving. Clear display, bright colors, easy to follow! Touch screen for easy use. Many selections in the menu make it so fast and easy.

The voice is easy to listen to, although she does sound upset with me if I go a different direction than what she told me to! She seems a bit stern when I make her "redirect" her planned route. But the truth is, it is done quickly and effortlessly. There are always two ways to go around here to get to your destination. So if you take a right when she says go straight, she will recalculate the destination using your direction traveled and do it within a few seconds!

Did I say I love my Garmin?

If you would like more information on the Garmin, go to their website, or visit Meijer on their website and take a look. Meijer even has a "buy two" deal for about $288 for both. A package, one for you and one for the missus!

I bet you think they paid me a bunch for writing this post. Nope! I am just so exited to have this Garmin that I had to tell everyone to take a look. Don't wait long! They won't last at this price and then you will have to pay more for the "new" model.

For you classic car buffs, all you need is a "cigarette" plug to help charge the batteries. If you don't have a smokers model, it should still have the plug-in.
It is sure going to help me around the state this summer so I don't get lost finding the next car show!
