2011 Mopar Challenger Drag Pak to have Viper V10

Photobucket

The Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, which made its debut back in 2009, is the very definition of a factory prepped drag-ready car. All that have been produced so far have been snatched up quickly, proving that there is indeed a market for a turnkey racer.

The big news for 2011 is that the Drag Pak is is moving on from the 6.1 liter Hemi it has been using for power, and replacing it with an 8.4 liter, Viper V10 backed up with a two speed automatic transmission. Power output is identical to the now defunct Viper at 600hp and 560 lb-ft of torque.

Other race only goodies include built in roll control, body in white construction, fuel cell, polycarbonate door windows, lightweight front brakes, and race style wheels and tires.

Three packages are available. The Competition Package costs $7,950 and features an eight point roll cage, six point safety harness, and mesh window net so you can enter and exit Dukes of Hazard style. The Mopar Body Logo Wrap will cost $950, and if you don't like white for an additional $6,800 you can have one of an assortment of colors.

If you want one, you better hurry. Only 70 examples will be produced, with a starting price of $85,512.

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT to have 475hp, increases across the board

Photobucket

In the ever changing modern horsepower wars, it was inevitable that we see a healthy bump for the Dodge Challenger. After all, it is by far the heaviest of the trio of modern muscle, alongside the Mustang and Camaro. And now this leaked info from a Dodge dealer document confirms that both the V6 and V8 variants of the 2011 Challenger will get more ponies.

The 3.6 liter V6 will get a nice increase up to 305hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. This constitutes a 50hp jump from the 2010 model's 3.5, along with an increase of 18 lb-ft of torque.

The 5.7 liter Hemi will see 379hp and 410 lb-ft, and the range topping SRT gets 475hp and 460 lb-ft from it's 6.4 liter V8. That represents a 50 hp increase for the big 6.4 and a whopping 40 more pound feet of torque. The 5.7 destined for the R/T model only sees a modest increase of 7 horsepower and ten pound feet.

According to Allpar, the car will also receive an 8 speed automatic transmission, the R/T will keep the same power levels, and the V6 motors will receive a 40hp bump to gain a total output of 290hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. According to Dodge president and CEO Ralph Gilles, the introduction of the retro color celebrates "four decades of Challenger performance." We'll just stick with black, thanks.

In other Mopar news, it seems that the average Dodge Challenger owner spends about $600 on accessories and performance parts from Chrysler's Mopar catalog. Strangely enough, the most popular item are the brushed stainless steel door sill guards.

See the press release below for the complete list of Mopar's top selling Challenger accessories.

Mopar parts are unique in that they are engineered with the same teams that create factory-authorized vehicle specifications for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram vehicles - a direct connection that no other aftermarket parts company can provide.

More than 70 Years of Mopar

When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar (a simple contraction of the words Motor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s - the muscle-car era. The former Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth "package cars" equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of "special parts" for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Mopar parts are unique in that they are engineered with the same teams that create factory-authorized vehicle specifications for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge Car and Ram Truck vehicles – a direct connection that no other aftermarket parts company can provide.

The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle-car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth "package cars" equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of "special parts" for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Dodge Challenger tops in Consumer Reports owner satisfaction survey

Consumer Reports has surveyed 380,000 subscribers to rank satisfied new car owners and surprisingly the Toyota Prius is no longer the champion. 92 percent of Dodge Challenger owners said they would definitely buy another one if they had the chance to do it again.

This is huge for Chrysler, as they have long been known for nagging issues with their vehicles, as well as being routinely beaten down by Consumer Reports.

The Big 3 improved their standings in the rankings overall, as 9 percent of American models were at the top of the list. For all the details, head over to the Consumer Reports website.

SEMA 2009: Dodge Challenger 1320

One of the show cars Dodge brought out to this year's SEMA was this Dodge Challenger 1320. Based on a Drag Pak Challenger, this car was created for one purpose: living life a quarter mile at a time.

Under the hood of the 1320 lies an all-aluminum Gen III 426ci crate engine putting out 556 horsepower and 540 lb-ft torque. Little touches like the inside headlight being turned into cold air ducting make the difference.

Check out the press release below for full details.

PRESS RELEASE:

Mopar Dodge Challenger 1320 Image Vehicle: Exploring a Street-legal Drag Pak Challenger
The Dodge Challenger 1320 began life as a Mopar Drag Pak Dodge Challenger. The current Drag Pak option is a light-weight, stripped-down, race-only, special-order version of the Dodge Challenger designed for competitive drag racing.

For the street-legal design, Mopar's design team took the vehicle back to its roots with styling reminiscent of vintage Mopar muscle, updated with today's technology. The Dodge Challenger 1320 image vehicle, named for the 1,320 feet on a quarter-mile drag strip, features Mopar's 426 cubic-inch, all-aluminum, HEMI® V-8 crate engine that generates 556 horsepower. The engine is equipped with unique Mopar-designed valve covers and a dress-up kit. Mopar's long-tube headers and exhaust system allow the cubic inches to breathe. Electric cutouts allow the exhaust to bypass the muffler system, which exits through custom side pipes for added rumble at the dragstrip. Power is put to the ground via a six-speed manual transmission through a custom Dynatrac rear housing with Mopar Dana 60 internals and a selectable, ARB locking differential. Mopar police wheels, widened in the rear, are strapped with Mickey Thompson street-legal drag radials to provide extra grip at launch. A four-corner, adjustable coil-over kit is provided by Mopar as an option for the Dodge Challenger. This system improves the handling of the vehicle under extreme loads of 556 horsepower and 540 lb.-ft. of torque.

Following Mopar's high-impact color heritage, the design team layered the 1320 in Acidic Hue, a non-metallic yellow paint and added matte black graphics. The body is lightened with the following carbon-fiber components from Mopar's design team and Seibon:

• Bulged hood with HEMI scoop
• Front spoiler
• Grille panel/headlamp surround

The interior is equipped with bare necessities--Dodge Viper seats, a sport steering wheel and a Hurst shifter. The rear seat, center console and radio have been removed in order to reduce vehicle weight and maintain the 1320's no-nonsense theme.

SEMA 2009: HPP Dodge Challenger Daytona

The Daytona/Superbird was built during a time when manufacturers would do anything for a competitive advantage in NASCAR. It wasn't really supposed to even sell, but it's cool race car looks have earned it a place in muscle car lore.

HPP brought out a new version to SEMA, based on the new Challenger. Although it packs a standard no frills 5.7L Hemi, it's the outside that counts. The whole car screams Hot Wheels, and just looks plain awesome.

Dodge Challenger NASCAR Nationwide Series car revealed

NASCAR's new Nationwide Series has already generated some buzz with the debut of the new Mustang stock car, and now it has another pony car in it's stable: the Dodge Challenger.

Chrysler pulled the wraps off it's new ride in Talledega, and the pleasant surprise is that the car retains a pretty stock looking front end. The Challenger joins not only the Mustang, but as of now unannounced cars from Toyota and Chevrolet in four races on the 2010 Nationwide Series calendar: Daytona in July, then later dates at Michigan, Richmond, and Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The new car designs are expected to be fully adopted for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series season. This process is the same way NASCAR rolled out the Car of Tomorrow in the Sprint Cup series. Check out Dodge's official press release below for more info.

PRESS RELEASE

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - Dodge Introduces Challenger For NASCAR Nationwide Series

TALLADEGA, Ala. (Friday, Oct. 30, 2009) – Dodge Motorsports today revealed the Dodge Challenger as the "New Car" for the NASCAR Nationwide Series and announced an expansion of its partnership with Penske Racing beginning in 2010. Dodge will provide support for Penske Racing's two-car operation in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, in addition to Penske's three teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

"As the performance brand of our new company, we are excited to expand our relationship with Penske Racing and introduce the iconic Dodge Challenger as our entry into the NASCAR Nationwide Series," said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Car Brand. "Motorsports are a significant part of the Dodge brand's legacy. Penske Racing has such a rich tradition in motorsports, and our partnership in the Nationwide Series will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the Challenger and offer our loyal Dodge enthusiasts plenty of excitement in this very competitive series next year."

Penske Racing will field two teams, both running the full-season schedule. The Dodge Challenger will be used at the four "New Car" races NASCAR has designated, starting at Daytona in July. At the other 31 events that complete the 35-race season, Penske Racing will field Dodge Chargers as it did this season with the No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger driven by Justin Allgaier. NASCAR is expecting full integration of the "New Car" in 2011.

Joining Allgaier will be Brad Keselowski in the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge. He also will compete in the Dodge Challenger for the four designated races and in a Charger for the remainder of the schedule.

"Today's announcement further reinforces our relationship and commitment to Dodge Motorsports, and we are excited about our future with this great brand," said Tim Cindric, President of Penske Racing. "We believe Dodge's relationship with Penske Racing will continue to elevate and highlight both our brands and deliver value to Dodge enthusiasts."

Allgaier, in his rookie season in the Nationwide Series, is currently fifth in the season point standings and the leader among Rookie of the Year candidates.

"Penske Racing has a very successful relationship with the Dodge brand," commented Allgaier. "I am honored to be one of Dodge Motorsport's drivers and to be able to drive the new Challenger in the NASCAR Nationwide Series is going to be awesome. The car looks great and will give the Nationwide Series its own identity."

2010 Dodge Challenger
The Dodge Challenger merges the best American muscle-car characteristics-unmistakable design, world-class handling, powerful engines and technology-to delight driving enthusiasts across several generations. The two-door coupe accommodates up to five passengers and is produced from the company's proven rear-wheel-drive platform. With three models of head-turning styling, two legendary HEMI® V-8 engine choices, up to 25 highway miles per gallon, more than 25 safety and security features and modern amenities, it's no surprise Dodge Challenger was awarded J.D. Power and Associates "Most Appealing Midsize Sporty Car" in its 2009 APEAL Study.

"The Dodge Challenger has proven to be one of the most sought after high-performance vehicles on the street today," said Dave Bailey, Senior Manager of Motorsports Engineering and SRT Body, Interior and Electrical. "Sharing our consumer's passion for performance through the race version of our Dodge Challenger will continue to showcase the unique engineering brought to our race and production vehicles."

Dodge will continue its support of Penske Racing's three-car operation in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2010 with drivers Kurt Busch, Sam Hornish Jr. and Keselowski.

The No. 12 Dodge Challenger will take part in Monday's NASCAR Nationwide test session at Talladega Superspeedway for the "new cars" with Allgaier driving.

"Big Daddy" Don Garlits to race again in new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak

Don Garlits is a drag racing legend who was an innovator during his long career. Garlits, who specialized in Top Fuel, was the first drag racer to produce such a machine with a rear-engine layout following an accident that cost him part of his foot. Later, he was among the first to be successful with a streamlined Top Fuel car.

Garlits is now 77 years old and it has been 6 years since his last race. And Big Daddy will be hitting the track again in Indianapolis behind the wheel of a new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. The car that Garlits is driving is the first production Challenger Drag Pak to roll off the line after the special performance model debuted last year at the Performance Racing Industry show. There's no word on whether Garlits will continue competing after this weekend's U.S. Nationals, but you can't deny that the urge never dies.

PRESS RELEASE:

'Big Daddy' Don Garlits to Return to NHRA Drag Racing in a Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar® at Mac Tools U.S. Nationals

Garlits will make his first appearance in organized drag racing in six years

Center Line, Mich., Aug 31, 2009 - "Big Daddy" Don Garlits is making a comeback to NHRA competition for the first time since 2003, driving his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar® into the heat of NHRA Stock eliminations at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend. His historic first run in the Drag Pak will be on Wednesday, Sept. 2, in A/Stock Automatic qualifying at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. The full U.S. Nationals event is scheduled to begin Sept. 2 with final eliminations on Monday, Sept. 7.

Garlits hung up his helmet after Top Fuel qualifying at the U.S. Nationals exactly six years ago in 2003. He last ran a stock class car in 1963 when he competed in a 1963 Dodge Max Wedge drag package car carrying "Garlits Dodge" graphics. His new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar has the same lettering emblazoned on its sides, along with the same Mopar graphics from his historic run last year alongside "Miss Mighty Mopar" Judy Lilly in Drag Pak prototypes at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

"I like my Dodge Challenger Drag Pak much better than a dragster," said Garlits, referring to the current way Top Fuel dragsters are campaigned. "It takes 25 people to get a dragster to the line these days. All I have to do with the Dodge Challenger is turn the key and take it there. When the light turns green I have a ten-second ride-which is almost three times what I used to get-and I even have time to look at the tach and shift gears."

"Big Daddy's" 2009 Dodge Challenger is the first Drag Pak by Mopar ever made. He took delivery at the Performance Racing Industry show in December 2008, receiving the keys along with a certificate of authenticity from Mopar. Garlits put the Drag Pak by Mopar through test and exhibition runs at the World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova Dragway Park in Cordova, Ill., last weekend.

Garlits retired for the first time in 1987, but returned for one race at Atlanta in 1992 and made a 300-mph run at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in 2001. He then ran a limited schedule of four NHRA National events each year in 2002 and 2003 before he stepped out of Top Fuel at the request of his wife, Pat. "I didn't want to come home and find my clothes all over the front yard," he said at the time he acquired his new Dodge Challenger, explaining that he had the home-front green light to run a doorslammer in competition, referring to his Drag Pak vehicle.

Garlits statistics

• 17 World Championship Titles and 144 National event wins
• Voted #1 Drag Racer for the past 50 years by the NHRA in 2001
• Won the prestigious U.S. Nationals eight times
• Car Craft Magazine Top Fuel Driver of the Year: 1969-70, 1972-73, 1975-78 & 1986
• Car Craft Magazine "Man of the Year": 1969, 1971-73
• American Hot Rod Association "Fuel Driver of the Year": 1971-74

Hurst unveils signature color combo on Series 4 Challenger

While gold and white are what Hurst is known for, some folks may want to have their aftermarket Charger in something a little different in order to not look like everyone else. Or maybe they just don't like gold and white.

For whatever reason, you can have your Hurst Challenger in a different color combination, this classy looking silver and black scheme with red trim. And these colors just happen to be the company's traditional colors.

The silver and black cars all come with a unique production number and certificate of authenticity. Niceties include a red anodized pistol grip shifter, 20-inch forged wheels with graphite gray painted spoke inserts, red perforated leather inserts and stitching, and Hurst logos on the dash, grille, wheel caps, floor mats, and on the front fenders. The Performance Series cars also come standard with Eibach suspension upgrades, a Magnaflow exhaust system, BFGoodrich KDW tires, and an optional Vortech supercharger.

PRESS RELEASE:

Hurst Performance Vehicles, one of the most recognized and revered names in automobile history, unveiled the first-ever Series 4 Supercharged 2010 Hurst/Hemi Challenger, dressed in the signature silver and black Hurst colors at the "Back to the Bricks" celebration in Flint, Mich.

Hurst legend, Doc Watson, joined Nate Shelton and Ron Flint of Hurst Performance Vehicles to unveil this newest addition to the Hurst Performance Series, which is complete with red accent stripes and detail throughout.

"We are honored to be here in Flint today to introduce the newest Hurst Executive Hot Rod," said Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst. "The Back to the Bricks celebration is the perfect place for us to join Doc and introduce this stunning car as a tribute to Hurst's legacy."

The numbered silver and black Challengers come equipped with a wild red anodized HARD-DRIVE® pistol grip Hurst shifter and 20" one-piece polished aluminum Hurst forged wheels, featuring graphite gray painted spoke insets and red and black Hurst logo wheel centers. Hurst collaborated with Katzkin on the car's black leather interior, which features perforated red inserts, red top-stitching and logos. Each Challenger contains traditional Hurst red and black logos in the dash badge, grille badge, wheel centers, fender graphics and the embroidered floor mats.

Doc Watson and Hurst introduced the silver and black Hurst/Olds with GM in 1968, a program that went on to be the most famous Hurst production program ever.

"I am proud to be part of the continuation of a great Hurst tradition." said Watson. "These wonderful vehicles should prove to be some of the most collectible Hurst cars in the future."

Hurst limited edition cars are well known by enthusiasts worldwide and are some of the most iconic and valuable muscle cars sought out by collectors. The cars are readily recognizable due to Hurst's signature paint schemes and graphics.

The Performance Series cars are a limited numbered series. Each comes with a sequentially numbered dash badge and its own Certificate of Authenticity. These cars all feature Hurst's own AIR-SPEED® rear deck spoiler painted in body colors, Hurst/Eibach suspension, shocks and sway bars, Hurst/Magnaflow polished stainless steel cat-back exhaust, BF Goodrich KDW Performance Tires, Hurst/Katzkin leather interior, embroidered logo floor mats, a custom car cover and K&N Air Filters. Hurst cars feature painted stripes and graphics under clear, not stickers. SERIES 3 through 5 feature HURST/Vortech superchargers.

SMS 570 Dodge Challenger revealed!

Steve Saleen is determined to show everyone that his new company is different from the old one. He did so by renting out a rave club in Orange County. When the cover of the mystery vehicle was removed, it revealed the new SMS 570 Challenger.

The first SMS 570 Challenger, in fact. And it's headed to Barrett Jackson for auction after it's unveiling. The 570 is a mean looking machine, with revised body panels and red butterfly induction hood flaps.

The shade of purple that adorns those revised fenders is a shade of purple that is similar to Plum Crazy, but Saleen dubs it "Plum Insane."

The SMS Signature Series 570 Challenger does most of it's damage from under the hood, however. The already potent 5.7L Hemi sports a supercharger, raising horsepower to 500 in base trim and going all the way up to 700 horsepower.

There are also a host of suspension, brake, and interior changes to make the package a complete turnkey supercar.
