2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 on the dyno

Photobucket

The new and improved, as well as larger, 392 cubic inch Hemi present in the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is rated at a stout 470hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. These numbers already handily beat the previous generation's 425hp and 420 lb-ft, but it appears that they may be a little underrated.

The folks at Inside Line managed to get their hands on a 2011 model and strapped it to the dyno to find out what kind of power the new Hemi really puts out. The results were better-than-advertised rear wheel numbers of 452hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. And while the new Charger is still a good bit heavier than the Camaro or Mustang, this should help to even things up a little.

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392

Photobucket

Chrysler, a company on the rebound for the second time in it's life, is planning on taking SEMA by storm with 35 vehicles going on display at the car show extravaganza. One of the gems in this huge lot is the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392.

Power in the SRT8 392 has been kicked up a notch from the previously "normal" SRT8 thanks to a 6.4 liter V8 producing 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The kicker is that the 6.4 not only produces more power than the previous 6.1 liter, but it also delivers it with 15-20 percent better fuel economy thanks to variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation.

Other upgrades over the outgoing model include a retuned suspension with firmer shocks and quicker steering, a unique chin spoiler, and much more. Chrysler says it will only build 1,492 inaugural edition copies of the SRT8 392, with the first ones going on sale right after Thankgiving.

Launching Off the Line: Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Delivers New Levels of Performance With Loads More Torque, Horsepower and Maximum Handling

October 25, 2010 , Auburn Hills, Mich. –

Dodge's ultimate modern American muscle coupe, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, receives a big boost in horsepower and torque with the introduction of the legendary 392-cubic inch HEMI V8 powertrain for the street.

And the product story goes beyond the power rumbling under the hood.

Dodge performance loyalists asked for more power off the line, and the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 answers the call with 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. That's 90 lb.-ft. more torque at 2,900 rpm compared with the previous 6.1-liter V-8 engine.

Building on its original mantra of a rear-drive coupe that delivers balance between form and function, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 also brings world-class ride and handling along with high-performance braking and the latest technology that delivers improved fuel efficiency.

New, highly damped shocks offer a firm ride that maintains the feel for everyday commuting while being fully capable for the more challenging situations. SRT engineers recalibrated the suspension geometry to improve Challenger's balance, corning ability and steering responsiveness. Quicker steering ratios and new negative camber settings all around dramatically improve Challengers appetite for cornering.

The performance SRT-tuned, fully hydraulic steering system also has been improved with a new, heavy-duty pump and revised gearing to give drivers more direct feel and on-center response.

The result: the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392 is now more nimble and playfully "tossable" while still capable of an incredible .93g of lateral acceleration on the skid pad – the most of any production Challenger.
To kick off 2011-model year production, Dodge will build 1,492 Inaugural Edition models of the Challenger SRT8 392, all with exclusive content.

On the outside, Dodge is offering unique customization for those first 1,492 owners. Two colors and new full-body stripe combinations include Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes. All Inaugural Edition models will ride on standard 20-inch SRT-exclusive wheels that feature a polished face and satin black painted pockets.

Unique "392 HEMI" badges flank both fenders touting the historically significant V-8 engine. Mopar quad exhaust tips deliver the performance exhaust note while adding a serious muscle car styling cue. A larger front splitter and integrated front fender spats give this Challenger SRT8 392 better overall high-speed aerodynamics and balance.

A newly modified front fascia chin spoiler improves aerodynamics and is accent painted for a more aggressive look. The rear decklid spoiler also is completed in matching body color.

The race-inspired interior of the Challenger SRT8 392 Inaugural Edition features standard Smooth Pearl White leather-trimmed seats and dual blue stripes accented by unique blue stitching. Each of the front seats features an embroidered "392" just below the headrest. An exclusive, serialized "Inaugural Edition 392 HEMI" dash plaque, showing the sequential build number from 1 to 1,492, rounds out the exclusive interior content.

2011 Mopar Challenger Drag Pak to have Viper V10

Photobucket

The Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, which made its debut back in 2009, is the very definition of a factory prepped drag-ready car. All that have been produced so far have been snatched up quickly, proving that there is indeed a market for a turnkey racer.

The big news for 2011 is that the Drag Pak is is moving on from the 6.1 liter Hemi it has been using for power, and replacing it with an 8.4 liter, Viper V10 backed up with a two speed automatic transmission. Power output is identical to the now defunct Viper at 600hp and 560 lb-ft of torque.

Other race only goodies include built in roll control, body in white construction, fuel cell, polycarbonate door windows, lightweight front brakes, and race style wheels and tires.

Photobucket

Three packages are available. The Competition Package costs $7,950 and features an eight point roll cage, six point safety harness, and mesh window net so you can enter and exit Dukes of Hazard style. The Mopar Body Logo Wrap will cost $950, and if you don't like white for an additional $6,800 you can have one of an assortment of colors.

If you want one, you better hurry. Only 70 examples will be produced, with a starting price of $85,512.

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT to have 475hp, increases across the board

Photobucket

In the ever changing modern horsepower wars, it was inevitable that we see a healthy bump for the Dodge Challenger. After all, it is by far the heaviest of the trio of modern muscle, alongside the Mustang and Camaro. And now this leaked info from a Dodge dealer document confirms that both the V6 and V8 variants of the 2011 Challenger will get more ponies.

The 3.6 liter V6 will get a nice increase up to 305hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. This constitutes a 50hp jump from the 2010 model's 3.5, along with an increase of 18 lb-ft of torque.

The 5.7 liter Hemi will see 379hp and 410 lb-ft, and the range topping SRT gets 475hp and 460 lb-ft from it's 6.4 liter V8. That represents a 50 hp increase for the big 6.4 and a whopping 40 more pound feet of torque. The 5.7 destined for the R/T model only sees a modest increase of 7 horsepower and ten pound feet.

Dodge releases pictures of 2010 Mopar Challenger

Photobucket

Mopar has long been a name synonymous with Chrysler performance, and has also long been a supplier of go fast parts. And now they have their name on a tuned version of Dodge's Challenger, the 2010 Mopar Challenger. And with only a reported 500 examples being built, you may want to hurry if you hope to own one.

The cost of entry is $39,000 for the manual transmission equipped version, or $38,000for the automatic. A hood scoop and some accent colors don the outside, while the inside sports Mopar logos, seat thread accents, and a new steering wheel. Drivetrain is the standard, untouched R/T spec Hemi.

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 to hit 480hp?

Photobucket

With the horsepower wars hitting their stride (with even Hyundai possibly joining the fray, the good looking but heavy Dodge Challenger needs a little boost in power to keep up with Ford and Chevy. And rumor has it that this is exactly what the updated 2011 Dodge Charger will receive, with the SRT8 potentially receiving a bump of 55 horses to 480.

According to Allpar, the car will also receive an 8 speed automatic transmission, the R/T will keep the same power levels, and the V6 motors will receive a 40hp bump to gain a total output of 290hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Other changes are minor cosmetically and structurally, and you can check them out at Allpar's site.

For 2010, Mopar has announced a new Performance Appearance Package that ups the ante even more. The package adds a body-color hood with a scoop, a body-color "Go-Wing" rear spoiler and strobe stripe performance graphics.

A separate package for the interior gets you a Mopar-branded T-handle shifter, bright pedal kit, bright door-sill guards, premium carpet floor mats and a vehicle cover.

Pricing for the exterior package is $1,995 and the interior package is $945 for the automatic and $780 for the manual.

Dodge Brand
Dodge is a full line of cars, SUVs and MPVs that are agile, daring, sensible and inventive. The product line includes the Dodge Caliber, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Journey, Dodge Nitro and Dodge Viper SRT10.

Dodge introduced two new vehicles last year: the all-new 2009 Dodge Journey, the brand's first crossover vehicle and the 2009 Dodge Challenger, a modern-day American muscle car. Dodge also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the minivan during the 2009 model year. With more than 65 minivan-firsts introduced since 1983 and more than 12 million Dodge and Chrysler minivans sold, Chrysler Group LLC has solidified its leadership in the segment. J.D. Power and Associates further acknowledged this leadership by naming the Dodge Grand Caravan the Most Dependable Van for 2009. Mopar parts are unique in that they are engineered with the same teams that create factory-authorized vehicle specifications for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge Car and Ram Truck vehicles – a direct connection that no other aftermarket parts company can provide.

More than 70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar (a simple contraction of the words Motor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle-car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth "package cars" equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of "special parts" for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

2010 Dodge Challenger R/T now available in Detonator Yellow

The Dodge Challenger is a nice throwback to simpler times, when horsepower was king and everybody wanted to look good and win the stoplight drags at the same time. While the Challenger is not going to see any major updates (it just came out a model year ago, after all) it will be seeing some new colors.

We've already seen the car in it's classic Plum Crazy hue, and now we have our first look at the Challenger R/T in Detonator Yellow. This is the "high impact" color that preceded Plum Crazy.

SEMA 2009: Dodge Challenger 1320

One of the show cars Dodge brought out to this year's SEMA was this Dodge Challenger 1320. Based on a Drag Pak Challenger, this car was created for one purpose: living life a quarter mile at a time.

Under the hood of the 1320 lies an all-aluminum Gen III 426ci crate engine putting out 556 horsepower and 540 lb-ft torque. Little touches like the inside headlight being turned into cold air ducting make the difference.

Check out the press release below for full details.

PRESS RELEASE:

Mopar Dodge Challenger 1320 Image Vehicle: Exploring a Street-legal Drag Pak Challenger
The Dodge Challenger 1320 began life as a Mopar Drag Pak Dodge Challenger. The current Drag Pak option is a light-weight, stripped-down, race-only, special-order version of the Dodge Challenger designed for competitive drag racing.

For the street-legal design, Mopar's design team took the vehicle back to its roots with styling reminiscent of vintage Mopar muscle, updated with today's technology. The Dodge Challenger 1320 image vehicle, named for the 1,320 feet on a quarter-mile drag strip, features Mopar's 426 cubic-inch, all-aluminum, HEMI® V-8 crate engine that generates 556 horsepower. The engine is equipped with unique Mopar-designed valve covers and a dress-up kit. Mopar's long-tube headers and exhaust system allow the cubic inches to breathe. Electric cutouts allow the exhaust to bypass the muffler system, which exits through custom side pipes for added rumble at the dragstrip. Power is put to the ground via a six-speed manual transmission through a custom Dynatrac rear housing with Mopar Dana 60 internals and a selectable, ARB locking differential. Mopar police wheels, widened in the rear, are strapped with Mickey Thompson street-legal drag radials to provide extra grip at launch. A four-corner, adjustable coil-over kit is provided by Mopar as an option for the Dodge Challenger. This system improves the handling of the vehicle under extreme loads of 556 horsepower and 540 lb.-ft. of torque.

Following Mopar's high-impact color heritage, the design team layered the 1320 in Acidic Hue, a non-metallic yellow paint and added matte black graphics. The body is lightened with the following carbon-fiber components from Mopar's design team and Seibon:

• Bulged hood with HEMI scoop
• Front spoiler
• Grille panel/headlamp surround

The interior is equipped with bare necessities--Dodge Viper seats, a sport steering wheel and a Hurst shifter. The rear seat, center console and radio have been removed in order to reduce vehicle weight and maintain the 1320's no-nonsense theme.

SEMA 2009: HPP Dodge Challenger Daytona

The Daytona/Superbird was built during a time when manufacturers would do anything for a competitive advantage in NASCAR. It wasn't really supposed to even sell, but it's cool race car looks have earned it a place in muscle car lore.

HPP brought out a new version to SEMA, based on the new Challenger. Although it packs a standard no frills 5.7L Hemi, it's the outside that counts. The whole car screams Hot Wheels, and just looks plain awesome.

Dodge Challenger NASCAR Nationwide Series car revealed

NASCAR's new Nationwide Series has already generated some buzz with the debut of the new Mustang stock car, and now it has another pony car in it's stable: the Dodge Challenger.

Chrysler pulled the wraps off it's new ride in Talledega, and the pleasant surprise is that the car retains a pretty stock looking front end. The Challenger joins not only the Mustang, but as of now unannounced cars from Toyota and Chevrolet in four races on the 2010 Nationwide Series calendar: Daytona in July, then later dates at Michigan, Richmond, and Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The new car designs are expected to be fully adopted for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series season. This process is the same way NASCAR rolled out the Car of Tomorrow in the Sprint Cup series. Check out Dodge's official press release below for more info.

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - Dodge Introduces Challenger For NASCAR Nationwide Series

TALLADEGA, Ala. (Friday, Oct. 30, 2009) – Dodge Motorsports today revealed the Dodge Challenger as the "New Car" for the NASCAR Nationwide Series and announced an expansion of its partnership with Penske Racing beginning in 2010. Dodge will provide support for Penske Racing's two-car operation in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, in addition to Penske's three teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

"As the performance brand of our new company, we are excited to expand our relationship with Penske Racing and introduce the iconic Dodge Challenger as our entry into the NASCAR Nationwide Series," said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Car Brand. "Motorsports are a significant part of the Dodge brand's legacy. Penske Racing has such a rich tradition in motorsports, and our partnership in the Nationwide Series will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the Challenger and offer our loyal Dodge enthusiasts plenty of excitement in this very competitive series next year."

Penske Racing will field two teams, both running the full-season schedule. The Dodge Challenger will be used at the four "New Car" races NASCAR has designated, starting at Daytona in July. At the other 31 events that complete the 35-race season, Penske Racing will field Dodge Chargers as it did this season with the No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger driven by Justin Allgaier. NASCAR is expecting full integration of the "New Car" in 2011.

Joining Allgaier will be Brad Keselowski in the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge. He also will compete in the Dodge Challenger for the four designated races and in a Charger for the remainder of the schedule.

"Today's announcement further reinforces our relationship and commitment to Dodge Motorsports, and we are excited about our future with this great brand," said Tim Cindric, President of Penske Racing. "We believe Dodge's relationship with Penske Racing will continue to elevate and highlight both our brands and deliver value to Dodge enthusiasts."

Allgaier, in his rookie season in the Nationwide Series, is currently fifth in the season point standings and the leader among Rookie of the Year candidates.

"Penske Racing has a very successful relationship with the Dodge brand," commented Allgaier. "I am honored to be one of Dodge Motorsport's drivers and to be able to drive the new Challenger in the NASCAR Nationwide Series is going to be awesome. The car looks great and will give the Nationwide Series its own identity."

2010 Dodge Challenger
The Dodge Challenger merges the best American muscle-car characteristics-unmistakable design, world-class handling, powerful engines and technology-to delight driving enthusiasts across several generations. The two-door coupe accommodates up to five passengers and is produced from the company's proven rear-wheel-drive platform. With three models of head-turning styling, two legendary HEMI® V-8 engine choices, up to 25 highway miles per gallon, more than 25 safety and security features and modern amenities, it's no surprise Dodge Challenger was awarded J.D. Power and Associates "Most Appealing Midsize Sporty Car" in its 2009 APEAL Study.

"The Dodge Challenger has proven to be one of the most sought after high-performance vehicles on the street today," said Dave Bailey, Senior Manager of Motorsports Engineering and SRT Body, Interior and Electrical. "Sharing our consumer's passion for performance through the race version of our Dodge Challenger will continue to showcase the unique engineering brought to our race and production vehicles."

Dodge will continue its support of Penske Racing's three-car operation in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2010 with drivers Kurt Busch, Sam Hornish Jr. and Keselowski.

The No. 12 Dodge Challenger will take part in Monday's NASCAR Nationwide test session at Talladega Superspeedway for the "new cars" with Allgaier driving.

Hurst unveils signature color combo on Series 4 Challenger

While gold and white are what Hurst is known for, some folks may want to have their aftermarket Charger in something a little different in order to not look like everyone else. Or maybe they just don't like gold and white.

For whatever reason, you can have your Hurst Challenger in a different color combination, this classy looking silver and black scheme with red trim. And these colors just happen to be the company's traditional colors.

The silver and black cars all come with a unique production number and certificate of authenticity. Hurst Performance Vehicles, one of the most recognized and revered names in automobile history, unveiled the first-ever Series 4 Supercharged 2010 Hurst/Hemi Challenger, dressed in the signature silver and black Hurst colors at the "Back to the Bricks" celebration in Flint, Mich.

Hurst legend, Doc Watson, joined Nate Shelton and Ron Flint of Hurst Performance Vehicles to unveil this newest addition to the Hurst Performance Series, which is complete with red accent stripes and detail throughout.

"We are honored to be here in Flint today to introduce the newest Hurst Executive Hot Rod," said Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst. "The Back to the Bricks celebration is the perfect place for us to join Doc and introduce this stunning car as a tribute to Hurst's legacy."

The numbered silver and black Challengers come equipped with a wild red anodized HARD-DRIVE® pistol grip Hurst shifter and 20" one-piece polished aluminum Hurst forged wheels, featuring graphite gray painted spoke insets and red and black Hurst logo wheel centers. Hurst limited edition cars are well known by enthusiasts worldwide and are some of the most iconic and valuable muscle cars sought out by collectors. The cars are readily recognizable due to Hurst's signature paint schemes and graphics.

The Performance Series cars are a limited numbered series. Each comes with a sequentially numbered dash badge and its own Certificate of Authenticity. Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger reportedly heading to NASCAR in 2010

Admittedly, I'm just not much of a NASCAR fan. Maybe it's because they drive around endlessly in circles. More likely, it's because I don't find Impalas and Camrys all that interesting racing around a track.

So finally, someone seems to be waking up in the stock car world and smelling the proverbial coffee. In an attempt to boost the series' viewers and souvenir sales, Fox Sports is reporting that Ford and Chrysler plan to introduce Mustang- and Challenger -bodied racers into the Nationwide series next year.

The new deigns are due to be submitted for approval on June 26th, and reportedly the new stock cars are going to look a whole lot more like real cars than the ones we see today. Unfortunately, GM is opting to stick with the Impala instead of going with the Camaro. Bummer.

Along with the success of the recently reintroduced Cobra Jet Mustang, might we see a return to the old adage "race on Sunday, sell on Monday?"

Consumer Reports pits modern muscle cars against each other in battle of supremacy

Consumer Reports is famous not for comparing high performance vehicles, but the reliability of say, econo boxes and mid size sedans. But the guys and gals that work at CR are true car fans, and that fact is quite evident in this video which pits the three modern muscle cars against each other.

The video previews an upcoming comparison test between the Ford Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro SS, and Dodge Challenger R/T. Watch the rubber burn.

Classic Design Concepts Group 2 Widebody Challenger

Classic Design Concepts is a Novi, Michigan based company that has been modifying cars since 1990. Their most recent creation is seen here, the Widebody Challenger, based on the wildly popular new Dodge musclecar.

The Group 2 Widebody Challenger made it's debut at SEMA in 2008, and now the 575hp creation has hit the street. The quality of the build on the Widebody is much closer to OEM than aftermarket, and just goes to show you why several manufacturers such as Ford, Saleen, and Roush have relied on CDC to produce parts for them.

CDC doesn't produce entire cars like many others, however, opting to simply offer high quality parts for enthusiasts. They just prefer to let customers create their own unique cars.

Included in the Group 2 package are new composite front fenders, left and right spoiler canards (side wings) and rear "billboard" panel and fenderwell extensions. In total, the new body panels add six inches to the width of the Challenger.

The car can then accommodate 11.5-inch wide wheels at the rear and 10-inch wide wheels up front, enabling better grip for acceleration and cornering. Customers can purchase the package with USW 20-inch three-piece wheels and Pirelli PZero Rosso tires or find their own combination. Other options from Classic Design Concepts include a stainless steel wire mesh grille, sequential taillights and a fully functional shaker hood system, a CDC specialty.

This particular Challenger also has a few additional components not sold directly by Classic Design Concepts. Under the hood is a Vortech supercharger system that works in conjunction with the shaker hood system to boost the Hemi V8 to 575 horsepower, and out back, a Corsa exhaust system ensures a true muscle car sound emits from the tailpipes. Lastly, a KW coilover suspension system helps reduce body roll and improve handling, and a Baer drilled-and-slotted big brake upgrade provides additional stopping power.

All of the body components are $11,995 installed, or $5,895 not including wheels and tires. The shaker system, including the composite flat hood, adds another $2,495. To build this exact car, you'd also have to spend $6,400 (Vortech supercharger), $3,095 (KW adjustable coilovers), $3,525 (Baer Extreme Plus brakes) and $1,870 (Corsa exhaust system). Add that to the $42,745 price of a base Dodge Challenger SRT8 plus $695 for the manual transmission, and you end up with a $72,820 car.

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8

Autoblog drives the Hurst Hemi Challenger

Well, somewhat of a first drive. Although they were limited to 25 mph, the folks at Autoblog were able to obtain some opinions on what makes the car tick.

The speed limitation was due to the fact that the car still wears prototype wheels, in all their retro glory. The car itself is a nice homage to Hurst's glorious history of making shifters as well as the Hurst Olds of the 1970's. The gold and white package complete the package.

For the complete and somewhat limited, driving impressions, head over to Autoblog.
